Enoshima — Where a Dragon Fell in Love

Enoshima was once seen as a sacred island.

Its fame comes from the legend of the Five-Headed Dragon (Gozuryu) and the maiden Benzaiten. Long ago, a five-headed dragon lived in a lake in Fukasawa, Kamakura, causing floods and storms, and villagers even offered children as sacrifices. After an earthquake, Benzaiten appeared in golden light, rained stones from the sky, created a new island—Enoshima—and lived there.

The Gozuryu fell in love and proposed, but Benzaiten refused, saying she could not marry a dragon who had harmed people. The next day the dragon swore to repent; Benzaiten accepted him, they became a couple, and peace returned.

From this story, Enoshima’s “Ryuren no Kane” (Dragon Love Bell) was set up to symbolize their romance. Couples ring the bell, make a wish, and lock a padlock to the fence—said to seal their bond and bring love to fruition.

At Enoshima Iwaya, you can see the dragon tied to the legend. The caves are known as a place of training, and Hojo Tokimasa, regent of the Kamakura shogunate, is said to have trained here, praying for descendants.

During his training, a maiden appeared, promised to grant his wish, became a dragon, and vanished into the sea. The three dragon scales she left became the Hojo clan crest. In fact, the Hojo held power for over 130 years, from 1203 to the fall of the Kamakura shogunate in 1333.

At the center of this faith is Enoshima Shrine, later linked with Benzaiten worship. It has three halls—Hetsunomiya, Nakatsunomiya, and Okutsunomiya—enshrining three sister sea-linked goddesses, and the maiden-and-dragon story has been preserved as a key local tradition around the shrine.

Do you know Japanese mythology? It’s the ancient stories of how Japan began—its gods, heroes, and the land itself—still deeply tied to shrines, traditions, and daily culture.

Today I’ll introduce three myth-linked shrines in Chichibu (Saitama, near Tokyo). Surrounded by vast, primeval nature, Chichibu lets you walk through forests and mountains that can feel like stepping into a myth.

Many local legends trace back to Yamato Takeru, a hero every Japanese person knows: loyal, brave, powerful, yet never arrogant—an ideal warrior spirit. In photo page 5, you’ll see a Goshuin depicting him. A goshuin is a handwritten shrine/temple stamp you receive as a visit record—some Japan lovers travel nationwide collecting them.

① Chichibu Shrine: the region’s main guardian shrine (sōchinju). People pray for academic success, business prosperity, and family safety; it’s also known for a “wisdom” deity and study luck. Said to date back about 2,100 years—when Rome was strong in Europe, and one of Southeast Asia’s oldest kingdoms emerged in what is now Vietnam.

② Mitsumine Shrine: one of biggest “power spots.” It enshrines Izanagi and Izanami, Japan’s married creator deities, so many come for safe childbirth and a strong marriage. Tradition says Yamato Takeru climbed this mountain, guided by a sacred wolf messenger, and prayed for peace; even today the wolf is honored with the gods.

③ Hodosan Shrine: a legend-born shrine. In AD 110, Yamato Takeru was caught in a wildfire on the way to the summit and saved by a divine dog—origin of the “fire-stopping mountain” tale. It enshrines Emperor Jimmu, Japan’s first emperor, and is famed for protection from fire, theft, and misfortune. It also earned one star in the Michelin Green Guide Japan (travel guide rating).

On August 29, we visited TIMC TOKYO for an on-site tour and inspection.

We attended the Japan–China Medical Cooperation Forum hosted by Medical Excellence JAPAN (MEJ).

Around 50 medical institutions from China and about 20 medical institutions and companies from Japan joined the forum, along with representatives from the Chinese government—highlighting the growing attention on Japanese healthcare.
Cutting-edge cancer treatments such as proton and carbon-ion therapy, as well as stem cell therapy, were also featured, followed by discussions on the future potential of medical tourism between Japan and China.

We will keep strengthening partnerships and improving patient support so international patients can access Japanese healthcare with confidence.
